The Medicinal use of Vinegar
Control dandruff,
Get rid of dandruff quickly, follow each shampoo with with a rinse of 400ml apple cider vinegar mixed with 400ml of cold water. Another method is to apply 3 tablespoons vinegar to your hair and massage it into your scalp before you shampoo. Wait a few minutes, then rinse it out and wash as usual.
Condition your hair,
Re-vitalise your limp or damaged hair by combining 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar with 2 tablespoons olive oil and 3 egg whites. Rub the mixture into your hair, then keep it covered for 30 minutes using cling film or a shower cap. Shampoo and rinse as usual.
Use as an antiperspirant,
Splash a little white vinegar under each arm in the morning and let it dry. In addition to combating perspiration odours, using this method means that you won't get deodorant stains on your clothes.
Soak away aching muscles
If you have a sore back, a strained tendon in your shoulder or calf, or are feeling generally run down, adding 400ml apple cider vinegar to a bath is a great way to soothe away aches and pains or simply to take the edge off a stressful day. Adding a few drops of peppermint oil to the bath is also a great muscle relaxant and stress reliever.
Freshen your breath,
If you have eaten a lot of garlic or onions, a quick and easy way to sweeten your breath is to rinse your mouth with a solution made by dissolving 2 tablespoons apple vinegar and 1 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water.

You can cool painful sunburn by gently dabbing the area with with a cotton wool ball or soft cloth saturated with with white or cider vinegar .(This treatment is is especially effective it it is applied before the burn starts to sting.) Speed healing and prevent black-and-blue marks after a painful fall by soaking a piece of cotton gauze in white or apple cider vinegar and leaving it on the injured area for an hour.
Soothe sore throats,
Here are three ways that you can make a sore throat feel better by using vinegar:
- Gargle with 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar and 1 teaspoon salt dissolved in a glass of warm water, use several times a day if needed.
- For a sore throat as a result of a cold or flue, combine 50ml cider vinegar and 50ml honey and take 1 tablespoon every 4 hours.
- To soothe a cough and a sore throat, mix 100ml vinegar, 100ml water, 4 teaspoons honey, and 1 teaspoon hot sauce. Swallow 1 tablespoon four or five times a day, including one before bedtime.
WARNING Children under a year old should never be given honey.
Easier breathing,
Adding 50ml white vinegar to the water in a hot-steam vaporiser can help ease congestion from a chest cold or sinus infection. It is also good for your vaporiser as the vinegar will clear away any mineral deposits in the water tubes resulting from the use of hard water. Note: check with the manufacturer before adding vinegar to a cool-mist vaporiser.
Treat cold sores,
Quickly dry up a painful cold sore by dabbing it with a cotton wool ball saturated in white vinegar three times a day. The vinegar will quickly soothe the pain and swelling.
Cure for corns and callouses,
This is an old-fashioned, time-honoured method for treating corns and callouses. Saturate a piece of white or stale bread with 50ml white vinegar. Let the bread soak in the vinegar for 30 minutes, then break off a piece big enough to completely cover the corn. Keep the poultice in place with gauze or adhesive plaster and leave it over night. The next morning, the hard skin will be dissolved and the corn should be easy to remove. Older, thicker callouses may require several treatments.
Athlete's foot,
Quell the infection and quickly ease the itching from athlete's foot by rinsing your feet three or four times a day for a few days with undiluted apple cider vinegar. As an added precaution, soak socks or stockings in a mixture of 1 part and 4 parts water for 30 minutes before washing them.
Beautify your skin,
Using vinegar as a skin toner dates back to the time of Helen of Troy. And it is just as effective today. After you wash your face, mix 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with 400ml of water as a finishing rinse to cleanse and tighten your skin. You can also make your own facial treatment by mixing 50ml cider vinegar with 50ml water. Gently apply the solution to your face and let it dry.
Treat age or sun spots,
Before you take any drastic measures to remove or cover up the brown spots on your skin caused by over-exposure to the sun or hormonal changes, try vinegar. Simply pour some full- strength apple cider vinegar onto a cotton wool ball and apply it to the spots for 10 minutes at least twice a day. The spots should fade or disappear within a few weeks.
Soften cuticles,
You can soften the cuticles on your fingers and toes before giving yourself a manicure by soaking your hands or feet in a bowl of undiluted white vinegar for 5 minutes.
Make nail varnish last longer,
Nail varnish will have a longer life expectancy if you first dampen your nails with some vinegar on a cotton wool ball and let it dry before applying your favourite varnish.
Clean your glasses,
When it is harder to see with your glasses on than it is with them off, they probably need a thorough clean. If your specs have glass lenses, applying a few drops of white vinegar and wiping them with a soft cloth will easily remove dirt, sweat and fingerprints, to leave them spotless. But you shouldn't use vinegar on plastic lenses.
Jellyfish or bee-wasp stings,
If you have an encounter with a jellyfish, pouring some undiluted vinegar on the sting will quickly take away the pain and allow you to scrape out the stinger with a plastic credit card. The same treatment can also be used to treat bee and wasp stings. But using vinegar on stings inflicted by the jellyfish's cousin the Portuguese man-of-war is now discouraged because vinegar may actually increase the amount of toxin released under the skin.
WARNING If you have difficulty in breathing or the sting area becomes inflamed and swollen, it is important to seek medical attention at once; you could be having allergic reaction.
