Top Tips

>> TIPS FOR KIDS

Make sure your kids are aware of online dangers with these useful tips:

Personal details

Don't reveal personal details such as your real name or email address to strangers

If someone's behaving inappropriately tell an adult. You can also report the incident to CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre) by visiting www.ceop.gov.uk and clicking the 'report abuse' button

Meeting up

Don't meet anyone you chat to online face to face unless you're accompanied by a trusted adult

Opening files

Never open files you aren't sure about; these could contain viruses or disturbing images

Cyber bullying

If someone you know is being a bully online, tell a trusted adult. You can copy and paste examples to use as evidence or save chatroom logs to show an adult

>> SECURE EMAIL

Hushmail provide a free and very secure email service. All your outward mailings can be automatically encrypted. If required you can make very good use of the free autoresponder service that comes with your hushmail account. You can leave a permanent message on your autoresponder service or simply use it to plug other links. You will find the autoresponder service in the preference section.

I>> ISO FILES
If you have a PC or laptop with an optical drive, you can use software such as Nero or Roxio (often bundled with new computers) to turn the contents of most software discs into ISO file. You can then use a free programme such as Daemon Tools Lite (www.daemon-tools.cc) to use these files to create 'virtual' drives on your PC's hard drive that work just like the original CD or DVD. This is handy for running or installing your software on netbooks without DVD drives.

>> QUICK SUMS
Need to do some quick sums? Windows comes with a built-in calculator. In Vista and Windows 7, click Start and type Calc into the search box, and press Enter. In Windows XP click Start, then Run and type Calc in the search box, press Enter. The calculator is fairly basic. To perform more advanced calculations, click View on the calculators menu and choose Scientific. To return to normal, click View and then Standard.
